Not getting proper debug feedback

in the perl script in which I'm executing the "set console"
command. Using the perl telnet library, I log into my
portmaster, "set debug isdn-d" (which works), but when I
try to "set console" via the perl code

@data = $connect->cmd("set console");
$data[0] is Command
elements of @data are blank

Meanwhile if I use the same code with a "show s/19",
I get the proper output....Do the different commands
produce different forms of output???
Any ideas on how to correct for these differences???
