odd radius 2.0 message...

Hey folks, I gave radius 2.0 a shot yesterday and we had a bit of trouble
with it. I have a DEFAULT entry pointing of "system" so it will
authenticate from the passwd file, but some users called saying it flat
wouldn't accept their passwords. They were typing the usernames and
passwords correctly (we verified many times). I noticed these messages in
syslogs:

May 24 11:50:18 apex radius[2748]: auth: access-request from
<portmaster IP> denied for unknown user jsmith
May 24 11:51:03 apex radius[2821]: auth: access-request from
<portmaster IP> denied for unknown user jsmith

It almost looks as if radius didn't use the DEFAULT entry and when it
couldn't find a user entry for "jsmith" it denied authentication. Is that
right? If so, how do I fix it?

It should be noted that we had a number of other customers logging into
the same portmaster. The customers in question were both Windows 3.1
users logging in with the IE dialer (I think version 3.0).
