This event occurred while disconnecting and reconnecting
modems within the pool as I was moving them to other
rack shelving.
What occurred is as follows:
Attaching modem back onto S-24, the modem appeared to not
reset as the (TR) light was out on the modem. Only the
(MR) (AA) lights were lit. Resetting again failed to reset
the modem.
Using the (add modem) in the PM, the init. string was added
again to make certain the information had not slipped some-how.
The port was reset with NO result.
Thinking the modem was DOA I removed the modem from S-25 and put
it on S-24. Same result, only when I put the modem back on S-25,
it too appeared DOA. Being dumb as a rock I did the same thing with
the modem on S-26, removing it and placing it on S-25. Same result,
another DOA modem and or Port.
Not to be outdone by dumbness I took a new out of the box modem
and placed it on S-26. Same result with this the 4th DOA modem.
So now I have problems with Modems or Ports S24 thru S26 plus
a DOA modem in a box.
Weird thing was that after putting all the modems back in the pool,
the calls started to hit these modem lines, they answered and
seemed to be working properly. I tested and confirmed.
The problem besides the obvious problem of the modems having the
Terminal Ready (TR) lights out is that we started to receive random
calls from customers. They were receiving the message...
( Unable to contact Server ..... Server not answering ....... Try
again later).
What we found while trouble shooting this problem was that some callers
were getting this message about 2-3 out of 4 tries, until they were
connected. NOTE: These call were not hitting the specific problem modems,
but were hitting lines on the same PM.
We have contacted Hayes and they recommended a second string to rewrite the
first string into memory on the modems. This done and failed, I am at a
total loss. The PM is showing no errors or anything that would indicate
a problem (far as I can tell with my limited knowledge). All ports show
the same information and seem to be working properly.
We really need some help on this problem. Should anyone have any clues,
experiences or suggestions, I would appreciate your imput.
Thanks in advance
