Hey! I just got some ATI info from one of my customers using an Archtek
Smartlink 56k modem with a Texas Instruments chipset, and it looks
amazingly identical to USR sportster ATI output. Even the firmware
revision numbers look similar (same numbering scheme). What's up with
this??? Is the TI chipset really a USR chipset in disguise? I even
checked the 3Com website for the product ID that was reported in the ATI
info from the Smartlink--00178500, and sure enough--it's there! 3Com
says its a "Sportster 56k/V34/V42b Voice Fax". The only problem is that
the latest V.90 firmware is from way back in 02/98 (and Sherwood thought
the 05/98 USR firmware was outrageous). Anyway, I'm thinking that once
these things gets a newer firmware, maybe I'll start recommending them
to customers instead of sportsters--They're about $50 cheaper! I know
Jake swears by these things!
