(PM) PM3 OSPF question

The Portmaster Routing Guide says on page 3-1 that it supports RFC-1583.
RFC-1583 illustrates OSPF using four areas connected as follows:

1 - 0
|
3 - 2

However, on page 3-2 of the Portmaster Routing Guide it states "All routers
must have at least one interface in area 0.0.0.0", which would constrain
network design much more severely than RFC-1583.

Before I reconfigure and renumber everything, can anyone tell me whether
PM3 OSPF fully supports RFC-1583? Are there any other known discrepancies
between the RFC's (1583 and 1587) and what PM3 OSPF can handle?

TIA,
