This is likely to be a problem with the modems. The USR couriers and MP8s
and MP16s are excellent, but depending on the particular version of code,
the MP8i and MP16i modems can bet either real bad or real good.

Try dialing into the bad modem with a terminal program and see what you
get.

I've got 2 MP8i's and 2MP16i's for sale if someone wants them.
