It is rarely easier to get the client to do anything.

I can see a lot of reasons why somebody might want to do this (faster
connects for vertical market applications, etc.). If I have 100 clients
that require V.34 connect only I'd rather type in a command on the server
than configuring 100 clients (I am sure I'd buy a different NAS before
I do that).
