Don't see how you can use that as an argument - the portmaster telnet
client works just fine towards a telnet server on a non-standard port,
because it does *exactly* the same thing no matter what port you connect
to (and it's independant of what you have set the telnet port to on the
portmaster) - starts out in character mode and initiates option
negotiation.

It's the typical *Unix* (and probably other OS'es too) telnet client
that behaves differently when you specify a port (even if you specify
the telnet port): It then starts out in line mode and refrains from
initiating option negotiation - which happens to work out just fine if
it's e.g. an SMTP server you're talking to (and the LF isn't required
because the SMTP server runs on Unix, but because that's how the SMTP
protocol is specified - it actually requires CR+LF, but sendmail isn't
picky about that.:-)

Personally I don't think having the portmaster telnet client do special
tricks to facilitate connecting to things that don't follow the telnet
protocol is a high priority RFE...
