I would tend to agree with this. I happen to have a phone line at my
house that I'm 99% certain is not V.90 capable. Back before V.90, I
used a Supra 28.8 modem, and never got better than 26.4, and often got
19.2. Now, against the PM3, On this line I consistently get 28.8
connects with both an LT winmodem and a Zoom dualmode external (with the
Lucent venus chipset), Yet I have a USR Sportster external that insists
on connecting at 49,333 from this line. When this happens, I get
nothing but renegs, and quite often, disconnects. The only thing that
fixes it is to lock it to V.34. I'm absolutely convinced that this
modem is just way too agressive when it connects. I think there are a
lot of modems with the same problem--I also think most of them are
USR's. Yet having that said, our highest recommended modem is the USR
Sportster. They work great if you force them not to be so agressive.
I've also been quite impressed with this Zoom (Lucent venus chipset)
modem. I think I'm going to start recommending those.
