(PMOD) Problem with Zoom and Hayes modems

I have a Hayes external speakerphone 56k modem (old Rockwell
single-mode; tried both old K56 code and v.90 (2.083) code), and I still
get disconnects with ComOS 3.8.2c2. The connection also retrains
constantly. Usually, the PM3 logs the same "Call Circuit Closed" as
always, and the modem reports (via AT&V1) "RETRAIN FAILURE". LA couple
of times I've had the modem completely lock up retraining, where the
only way to get it back is power cycle it.

I also have one of the free Zoom modems (model 2849) that has been
upgraded to v.90 (2.100 code). I get connects rates that are a good bit
higher (49333 vs. 44000) and it "seems" more stable, but I still get
disconnected. It shows up the same as above: the PM3 says "Call Circuit
Closed" and the modem says "RETRAIN FAILURE".

If I put an old 28.8 US Robotics Sportster on my computer, I can stay
connected at 28.8/28.8 all day long without a retrain/renegotiation. We
did have some telco troubles around here a while back, but that looks
like it is cleared up now. My parents live in the same exchange and
both have the newer Zoom external dual-mode modems (Lucent chips) and
don't get disconnected anymore.

Any suggestions? Any Lucent techs have any comments (is this a "known
thing" that is being worked on)? Thanks for any info!

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.
