Please forgive my lack of technical jargon here is what I have observed and
may be important to your situation:

+The modems (many of the newer v.90 implementations from 3com) try to
establish the highest rate possible. (Duh, right) However, when they
retrain they try to go past the capacitance of the line. This causes
unacceptable levels of CRC and eventually the connection gives up because of
all of the errors. It has been my experience that if you reign the modem in
the retrains go down. Consequently, the throughput goes up. It would be
nice if the radius logs would track the CRC errors at the end of the
session. Then we could definitively diagnose these issues.

+I have not made a scientific study but I think that the modems loose their
marbles after a while and you have to reset them. AND/OR/BECAUSE The chips
overheat. I took the cover off my modem and it has significantly reduced my
unexplained problems. Which could be a placebo but, it works for me.

+ I contacted 3com/USR and it is a known issue with the PM modems. However,
their 2nd tier of technical support is not much more knowledgeable then
their 1st level. I tried to contact their engineering staff: They are
unavailable for consolation on such issues. Hence, they are a dead end.

+ You can't please everyone. The newest ComOS has reduced our "modem based"
problems considerably.
