Ok, my two cents worth. I find that USR 56K modems (non-winmodems) give
some of the best rates. Under good phone conditions I see 50,666 speeds
easily. But they sometimes negotiate; not often, but maybe a few times an
hour. I have found really good results using the KFlex protocol with LT
wins though. You didn't say what kind of modem you needed--desktop,
laptop, external, internal. I use a Motorola MobileSurfr 56K PCMCIA which
is Rockwell based (not Rockwell HCF) and connect very well to our PM3--42K
at my house, and 46K across town. I have not flashed it to the "beta"
v.90 code, and I don't think I will. 42K seems to be the standard in my
area; I have a friend with an ISA Best Data Smart1 56kflex (not upgraded
to v.90) and it consistently connects at solid 40-42K rates as well. This
modem also appears to be rockwell based.
In short, I feel like LT Wins give the best speed with the least
renegotiation, but if you're working with an older computer, get a
hardware modem like a USR or Best Data. HCF modems are becoming more and
more prominent, but in my opinion, they're more trouble than they're
worth, cheap or otherwise.
