I agree for the most part. These things are pieces of junk. However,
just the other day, I had a customer who was having all kinds of
problems with disconnects and the like. I went over to his house to
find that he had an SM56 ISA card running build 54. The stupid thing
would only connect at 14.4. I even tried dialing into our V.34 modem
bank, and still it would only do 14.4, and it would disconnect after a
just a few minutes. I tried downloading Motorola's build 67.1, but
couldn't stay connected long enough to get it downloaded. Finally, I
drove back to the office, downloaded 67.1, put it on floppies, and went
back to the customer's house. Right after I installed it (and believe
me, it was a pain to install--couldn't open the COM port after the
upgrade... got it working after about 30 minutes of monkeying with it),
it was running at 50,666, and from everything I could tell it was
stable. However, all in all, I spent about 3 hours working on this
thing. My advice would be to keep a few LT winmodems on hand at all
times, and when a customer has problems either trade their modem for an
LT, or sell them the modem for your cost (around $30). Either way, in
the end, it'll cost you less than the amount of time you spend trying to
make these pieces of junk work!
