I still find this as such a generalization. How can this be such a tried and
true statement after trying and testing *one* modem? I've tried several, and
with the exception of one modem, have connected every time at either 53,333
or 49,666 and have never had any problems installing the modems in any
machines. The one particular case where I had a problem was yesterday when
installing one of these Motorola SM56 modems in an HP system. I found the
system did have many other problems as well, though. And upon checking their
web site and taking their advice, I was able to use the string to limit the
connect speed to 42K and connected every time after that at 42,333. I'm not
saying that they are the best modems, but I am saying that they have
compared almost as favorably in the cases I've dealt with, as have the
expensive USR modems, and we won't even begin to mention USR's infamous
Winmodems. ick. Now, as for the generalization about getting what you pay
for and "that's what you get when you buy a $17 modem," I used to think this
way also, but if you stop and consider, according to most on this list the
Lucent Winmodem, or LT Winmodem as it used to be known, is a nice
substitute. I won't disagree there, but the same people who tote that modem
and say this Motorola modem is junk don't evidently shop the same web sites
I do. I found the LT Winmodem as cheap as $13 each yesterday. So that
argument doesn't really hold that much water in my opinion. I have had as
good or better luck lately with LT
Winmodems as any USR product, which is really sad considering the price
difference. And try to find support on USR/3Com's site. Good luck with that.
First, if you don't know what model number and time period the modem was
made in, forget it, so that might rule out talking an elderly customer
through it on the phone. Second, has anyone found a phone number readily
available on USR's site?
Anyway, just my ramblings, but it seems that at least for me, the SM56 has
done as nicely so far in all the instances I've tried it, as any other modem
I've tried, and we service a lot of modems. Maybe if it's not working out as
well for you, could it be that you are connecting to different types of
equipment on your end? We are using Lucent PM3 machines here.
