A local Compaq reseller has told me that if you go to Control Panel,
System, Performanace, Graphics and turn down the Hardware Acceleration it
will stop or at least reduce the number of disconnects. I asked if it would
stop the initial connection problems and didn't get much response. Anyone
ever tried that with success?
Also, some others have previously mentioned that the Rockwell HCF modems
do not work well with noisy phone lines. I've had a chance to see exactly
that recently. A couple co-workers brought their Acer and Compaq computers
in wanting me to fix their connection problems. Well, guess what? Both
modems actually worked flawlessly on our phone line in the office. Of
course we are in town about 4 blocks from the central office and never have
a problem on our test line. The Acer computer I upgraded to a new Zoltrix
driver. They took them back home and had the same problems. It takes
forever to connect and when it does the connection speed varies anywhere
from 16.8k to 31.2k. And disconnects.
Also, anyone a believer of cordless phones causing connection problems? My
boss heard that somewhere and I had always blown it off until I tested my
voice phone line at home with my 2 cordless phones. When I had my US
Robotics modem connected at 49,333 and downloading a large file the
download stopped immediately when I plugged in one of the cordless phones.
I tried it repeatedly with the same result. Most of the times the download
would stop and not restart when I unplugged the cordless phone. The modem
wouldn't reliably connect at all when one of the phones were plugged in.
