(PMOD) problem with HSP 56 audio modem riser

Delurking to plead for help.

I've got two customers with these 'HSP 56 audio modem riser' modems having
problems. The first was working fine and now she's disconnected
('user-request') after 2-4 minutes. The second suddenly can't pass
authentication. Win98 for both, have checked the settings; all are fine.

ati3 says ' PCTel 7.64-PCC-01-MS' for both.

Other users (other modems!) working fine.
Livingston PortMaster PM-3 ComOS 3.8.2c2

Any ideas or experience with these modems out there to help me?
