What is the serial port set to? I be this is your cause of headache.
if it's not a 16550 UART, like a 8250 or 16450, You don't really want to
use the external modem at full-speed.
Also, if it is a 16550, you should set the port speed (port speed of the
serial port itself) to 115200 and see if this helps.
Sounds like you got it over-running buffers somewhere along the way.
