Merit suggests using the host prompt. The user sees
host:
login:
passwd:
and enters sliphost or something similiar to get slip.
I prefer adding a server suffix that is looked up in the users file:
joeuser%service
where service can be anything you want to put in users file. Usually at
least:
%ppp ppp for users with non PAP PPP
%slip slip
%ncslip non compressed headers slip
%ruucp rlogin protocol to port 541 for uucico
