My experience has been that every situation is different. All too often I
hear two equally talented, experienced engineers saying "OS X sucks, OS Y
rocks" "No no, I've used OS X for ten years and it rules, Y sucks!"
The answer is that your experience, your situation, and a good dollop of
luck/fate all influence our opinions of products. Someone with ten years
of Sun experience, whose Solaris installs have all gone well, naturally
swears by Solaris, whereas an old BSD hand swears by BSDI and had a bad
experience with Solaris once.
Rather than argue about whether BSDI is cruddy or Solaris is horrid or
whatever, why not look at integrating useful patches (as I understand some
of the non-Livingston and non-Merit patches to be) into code bases in a
way that is portable and effectual ACROSS platforms? :)
