The only time I ran into something similar like this was when my
portmaster ran out of memeory. I was running os 3.1 (I think) and when it
bombed the memory it also did something to the os. I couldn't access any
of the password file information in the portmaster. To solve I went to
server side validation. Cured a lot of problems.
