I highly recommend the pmtools that Brian Pollack (brian@indirect.com)
developed. They implement the PM protocol in perl therefore they provide
in essence a portable implementation of the PM protocol. I have used
them to accomplish what you are looking for as well as many other
things. You can find them at his ftp site below:
