=> This has become the single most frustrating issue I've had to deal
=> with with Livingston, and it's been going on a long time. Though
=> there are some close seconds.

At the time we started, we used a 16-port serial board, and all was fine
with our modems. When we grew out off this setup, the portmasters came in.
The one and only problem they have caused so far is hanging modems.
It NEVER happened before, and now our modems are on a timer and get
rebooted every morning at 5:00 am to get ride of the hanging modems.

I've alway wondered whether this was the cause, but seeing this discussion,
I'm almost shure that this might be one of the causes. Next to buggy
modem-firmware, which gets the modem looping in retraining and then forget to
drop the line after a while.
