Did you make sure XON/XOFF on the modem is OFF? Some modems have multiple
flags - one turns RTS/CTS on or off, another XON/XOFF on or off. So you
could have RTS/CTS *and* XON/XOFF on on the same modem. XON/XOFF plays havoc
with SLIP/PPP connections.
