Well, I think I have enough info now to know it won't work pure sync
on one end and sync/async on the other. I'm told the sync and async
PPP protocols are different ... still leaves me wondering why I never
see the TD light even blink, though.

Performance - as has been pointed out here in the past. This is an
interesting option, but it ain't a real 56k. However, for people like
me with some aging but still working PM11s, a stack of soon-to-be-
surplus Sportsters, and some rural countryside to fill with tiny POPs,
these Adtrans look real interesting ...
