Not sure if this provides any sort of answer... but async has the overhead
of a start bit and often 2 stop bit per byte transferred regardless of the
communication protocol used. A sync connection has no additional overhead
per byte, although it does have control bytes at the beginning and end of the
data block. One would expect the sync transfer to be faster, therefore, simply
due to the lower traffic on the line. Compare a couple of sync bytes, SOH,
EOT and two bytes of CRC to 11 bit per byte in async mode.

But then, I might we all wet :)
