more on AIX and in.pmd

I am installing my first Portmaster 2e-10 on AIX 4.1.4.
I can telnet to my Portmaster as well as use PMConsole
to configure it with no problems. That is, the ethernet and
tcp/ip seem to be working fine.

I can NOT get in.pmd running in any way I can verify.
After running PMinstall, I have the appropriate entries
in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf that point to port
1642 and /usr/etc/in.pmd, but even a refresh of inetd
or a IPL does not seem to start in.pmd.

How can I verify that in.pmd is active?!?! I've tried a
ps -ef | grep in.pmd and haven't seen it (unlike other
daemons started by inetd). I have verified that portmap
is running. Can I telnet to port 1642?

What could keep in.pmd from running?

I am trying to make a port on the Portmaster a pseudo-tty
device for the purpose of outbound faxing only. Has anyone
done this with AIX 4.1.4?
