Win95 PPP setup

Hi,
I have a question concerning the win95 PPP setup with a PM2.

Is it recommanded to enter the default gateway manually or not in the
control panel--> Network in Win95?

When I test the 2 options (manually enter the default gateway or not) the
connection always operates but when I enter the default gateway manually I
notice a quicker FTP transfer on our local LAN.

Which option is recommanded?

Any tips are welcome,
