I believe that Ascend uses a digital to analog device that then feeds
the analog signal to an analog modem. Thus there is a digital to analog to
digital.

I'm sure there are some drawbacks, but I can't think of any. I can think
of things that are gained by the fully digital setup, but that wan't the
question.
