1. We will not support any new modem technology until it is a standard.
USR is developing a competing standard that may not even interoperate with
the Rockwell system. Both are planning to submit them as standards. If
and when a standard comes out of that process, then we will look at
implementing it.

Such is life in the modem business. Great that manufacturers are creative
and inventing faster modulations, which many deemed impossible. Rockwell
finally kicks the codecs out in the products starting to ship next summer,
a feature the PM-3 has now (okay, next month :-).

2. Since we have yet to see technical requirements for either proposal
there is no way we can even begin to speculate about the ability of the
DSPs used today being able to support it. Maybe they will, maybe it will
require new modem cards, and in worst case, maybe it would require a new
unit entirely.

The proposed scheme relies on synchronization with the telco's codec in
the users local loop, requiring a digital connection on the ISP side,
reducing noise and thus allowing higher bandwidth.

If anything, it's an argument for digital connections on the ISPs side,
and digital products like the PM-3 on the ISPs side will be required
to get beyond 33.6k on the users side. I agree with MZ, that it may
take a couple years until the dust settles and this becomes a widespread
modulation, though.
