I've seen this same thing several times, and in all cases thus far the
problem has related to the "lack" of space in the /tmp directory. The
lack of space could easily be related to the exact number of users that
are trying to POP3 download mail at any moment.
As I understand it, some/all POP3 servers make copies of the email that
is being transmitted to the user and places the copy in the /tmp
directory. Its supposedly the old fashion way of sharing files, etc.
If an end user has received an incoming email that has an attachment,
the attachment is copied to /tmp as well. So, large sendmail files
equals large disk partitions.
