You forget a major point:
Deregulation.
AT&T, MCI, SPRINT, and a host of others are now allowed to offer local AND
long distance service - as well as all forms of ISDN and leased lines - to
consumers directly.
We're already seeing AT&T announcing PRI lines for half the cost of some
RBOCs to many areas. With this competition RBOCs will either have to drop
their prices or lose the business.
Which is why we're cautious. It would have to be a new product, which
would take a few months at least to design, test, beta, etc. Maybe in
time for mid-97. Possibly just in time for AT&T and the rest to penetrate
the high-priced markets with low priced service. Competion is expected
to be fierce.
It would be a shame to waste all that engineering time on a product that
is obsolete when it ships. Or at least that has lost its main attraction.
