Internet time is sort of like dog years.
Hell, I'm only 25. Since I just happened to start doing HTML in 1991 I
have people on HTML referring to me as a guru or an old-timer. I get a
kick out of it, but it is still weird.
Look at the comments on this list. How many times have you seen something
like "I'd wait, but 3 months is eternity on the nets", or similar things.
The said truth is no one really cares what you did for them yesterday,
and they barely care about today - they want to know what you'll do for them
tomorrow.
>You dont have to REALLY REALLY support it. I just suggested to sort of
>support it (or Ill support it), rather than just giving a potential
>trade-up custmer an answer of "NO".
We don't answer no. Sorry if that was implied. Hell, we even end up
fixing problems for customers when the problem is on their Cisco or
Ascend, etc... If someone calls in with a PM-11 problem what generally
happens is they'll be transferred to one of the techs who has been around
for a while and they'll do what they can. At the same time we, of course,
will explain to them the changes in the product line and the advantages of
the PM-2/3/25 and encourage them to trade up.
I should have clarified, by support I meant development support. ComOS 2.4
was it for the PM-11. The PMconsole from that time (I'm not sure of the rev
off-hand) was the last to officially support the PM-11. Things were
stabilized and locked, and frozen in time. Going forward all new development
was on the PM-2 family - later the PM-25, etc.
But as far as technical support for people who still have them, there are
a few people here who have been with Livingston since the PM-11 days.
>Well, if they are so rare, then you could just have 1 guy (the pm 11 guy).
We basically do. :-) While many PM-11 questions can be handled by most
anyone - it is VERY similar to the PM-2 - if it gets into the realm of
PM-11 lore, you usually end up talking to Bri. :-)
As you can tell, Bri loves that PM-11.
>that supports your existing products too! And the new stuff. Send me the
>PMCONSOLE source, Ill do it for free.
Maybe I can dig up a copy of the PMconsole that was written for the PM-11.
That should cover it, right?
>11 when I was investingating them and the answers I received were, "No we
>dont support them. We dont even have any. We havent seen any for years."
>I hope it was only that they didnt know that they were there, but I could
>have sworn I got an email from you saying the same thing.
That's not good. I appologize. I think it is lack of information. Not
a lot of people know that the RMA dept has a stack of them I guess. Once
upon a time (like last year) there were few of us around that tidbits like
that got passed around in conversation. We've grown so fast that is
breaking down, too many nodes to have a fully meshed network. Looks like
we need to put something together to make sure the new people know things
like that. That's the problem with growth like this - it fosters the
development of beaurocracy.
>Oh well. Maybe Im just going senile.
I doubt it. It was probably just an honest mistake by one (or more) of the
newer people, who had probably never seen a PM-11.
>Why dont you send me those old ones then if you dont need or support them
>anymore. I support them for myself and my clients and could use spare
>parts!!!!
I think we keep them around for spare parts. We do need it occasionally,
some of the people using them just don't want to give them up. But they
fail so rarely it isn't a common thing.
