Ahh... this is an INTERESTING question.

There are probably 5 or 6 packages out there available for linux/unix that
will convert email into a page either numeric or alpha. You could set up a
mailbox for EACH portmaster, make a cron job to ping each one every 5
mins, if down, mail a prewritten file to the portmaster's mailbox and the
pager daemon software would then convert that into a page. Youd need just
a modem on the unix/linux system to do this.
