I have one customer that claims he gets dropped within a
couple of minutes, but dials in again and stays on OK.

One possibility for connections only lasting for a day is
automated telco line testing. I've seen our local exchange
do odd things to the line when testing. I think they test
for loading, ring current, etc.. I presume it's
supposed to test only lines that aren't in use, but I'm
not sure. Maybe ask telco to NOT auto-test your dial-up lines?
