Call me insane...
Actually the City power here is extreamly reliable. we've been
planning our full power backup system for a couple years now, but somehow
it always takes a back seat (usually till there is a problem).
The only time we had any real power problems here was one day when the
neutral leg on a transformer outside came off and a couple power pannels
in our building got so hot they were smoking. The fire department came
running through sceaming to get out and that the power was going to be
shut off immediatly. I was thinking about a smooth shutdown on the
servers, but grabbed the backup tapes instead. Everything did come back
up just fine. Think I made the right choice? (yes, a UPS would have
been good to have - I think it would be fun to stay connected to my
system and monitor it's decline in health as the cases and such start to
melt from the fire).
No we didn't actually have a fire but the FD was concerned because this
building has burned twice before (an old theater). Hmmmm... now where
are my notes regarding a potential move...
