Livingston undeliverables... (fwd)

Once upon a time Jaye Mathisen shaped the electrons to say...
>1) ChoiceNet -- nonexistent, promised, what, May?

It exists, many people are running the beta.

>2) RADIUS 2.0 -- waiting on docs...

Before the week is out you should be able to check this one off.

>3) The Livingston budget priced ISDN modem for the PC -- in PC week in
>December '95? due in March or so? Something like that.

That is on indefinite hold. It ran into a HW problem in late beta and
has been pulled with no schedule at this time. It is more an 'if' than a
'when' at this point.

>4) PM3's. Has anybody actually seen one? Not really fair given short
>notice, but given past track record, seems justifiable to include it.

There are a number of people running them in test. And if you attended any
shows from ONE ISPCON on you've had the chance to see one.

>5) OSPF -- I have mail from a Livingston VP promising this in '95 --
>somehow I doubt '96.

That was a problem. You're not the only one who expected it in '95. Then
things were shuffled and ISDN became a higher priority. We have an
engineer working on OSPF, BGP(4) and RIPv2 now. OSPF has been working well
in beta, and at this point he is mainly adding features and updating it to
the latest proposed spec in front of the IETF.

>6) Some low-end BRI stuff. Delivered. WOrks nicely.
>7) OR-xx stuff. Seems OK on the one that I've set up.

10/95-10/96 has seen 5BRI, entire OR family, and PM-2i/ei. Jumped from
3.1.4 to 3.3.3 with a large number of improvements and a few bug fixes
along the way.

Added to that will very shortly be RADIUS 2.0.

The PM-3 is still down for end of October. But I'm all for a delay if it
needs more testing to be rock solid. There is a lot of weirdness in the
real world. We'll see on that. But, barring catastrophe, that will be in
'96.

Also, barring catastrophe, OSPF will be in '96.

Barring a miracle the PL128 will not be this year. ChoiceNet is unknown
right now. If the beta continues to go smoothly it should be, but that is
a hard call.

>I can see this potential problem arising with T1/PRI issues with the PM3.
>Will it actually appear in usable form this year? Or do I have to bite

Our internet feed has been on a PM-3 for a while now. And many beta sites
are using it without problems.

>I suppose I could point out a few other problems, like take the cables for
>the PM25, the connector that goes on the PM didn't even have the screws
>molded in straight, and so on the back of my PM, you can only screw in one
>side or the other, because the cable screw heads off to parts unknown.
>Then one of them had the plastic head just spinning on the screw so it was
>near impossible to thumb-tighten.

Did you report it? We don't make cables, we buy them. We check each batch
but we can't check every single cable we ship. If there is a problem like
that we need to know immediately so we can check the supply we get from
the maker.

>Then one could point out the junior-high shop project mounting racks for
>the PM2E-10-30 line, with what can only be described as a pathetic racking
>scheme. I have piles of these sitting around too if you want some, plain
>rack shelves work better.

Note that the PM-25 and all later products have mouting holes (well,
except the OR family):

PM-25, PM-2i, PM-2ei, and PM-3

The IRX and PM-2/2e/2R/2eR were designed early and need an internal
redesign to handle mounting like that. When the products are overhauled,
or when a new product replaces them, then they will have the same mouting
system.
