Absolutely not. The modem's analog adapters have RJ45 connectors,
you can use either RJ45 to whatever (RJ45, DB25, etc) cables, or
get a bunch of adapters and then just use 3' cat5 cables.
BTW: I used 4-pair TP cable to connect the RJ11 ports directly
to the 66 blocks in my equipment room... just stripped back
the pairs and put RJ11 tips directly on them, and punched
the other ends down. 4 modems per card, 4 pairs per cable... nice.

The come factory preconfigured for autoanswer, 115Kbps, etc.
You can certainly 'expect' script program them just like
with other modems, but they need to reconfiguring initially
out of the box. To busy them out easily, I think you need
to use the management software, which also allows you to
flash upgrade them all (or any range) simultaneously (!).
The software does require WinBlows95 to operate. :(
