MZ is referring to the time when all the different manufacturers had their
own version of the 28.8 protocol. There was no way to make everyone
happy, and you were investing in a soon to be obsolete protocol (which
sucked compared to v.34, anyway).

At this point, most v.34 modems incorporate v.FC for backward
compatability. If you had invested in v.FC modems, and didn't support
v.34 because you couldn't afford to buy another 150 modems to keep up with
the standard, you'd have a LOT more ticked customers than if your v.34
modems didn't support v.FC...
