If your MTU is too high you have more chance of needing to reget the
packet due to errors.

We found the following settings ideal for a variety of modems.
MTU = 552
TCPRWIN = 2048
TCPMSS = 512

Just for the hell of it, I even use a 2400baud modem on one computer and use
the following settings:

MTU = 296
TCPRWIN = 2048
TCPMSS = 256

OK, browsing's a bit of a pain if I leave graphics on, but I telnet and deal
with my email on the server.
