re: Office Router to Portmaster over ISDN

I just spent a weekend getting my PM-OR-U up and running. I had similar
problems, but the root of my problem lied in the programming of my Cisco
router and not with the PM-OR-U.

To begin with, your PM-OR-U must be on a separate subnet from the PM2.
Once you set up the OR with it's address and netmask, set the protocol to
PPP, MTU to 1500, also be sure to set routing on and turn on compression.
If you plan on using multi-link, set maxports to 2 and set the high-water
mark to a fairly low value, say 256. Most important, set your idletime to
a reasonable value - the docs recommend 2 minutes. The gateway address you
enter on the PM-OR should be the address of the PM2 that you are dialing
into. You then must enter a location and dial group to dial into the PM2.
It sounds like you did all this ok...

On your PM2, enter a NETUSER, not regular user, with the exact same
parameters as is on your PM-OR. Be sure to specify the address as that
given to the PM-OR (not negotiated). Set the "user" as a dialin network
user, and set the maxports to 2.

NOW HERE'S THE PART LIVINGSTON DOESN'T TELL YOU ABOUT:
If you have a "real router", such as a Cisco, and your PM-OR-U falls behind
it, DO NOT add the subnet of your PM-OR-U to the ethernet interface of your
router. Instead, add a static route on the ethernet interface directing
all traffic for that subnet to the address of your PM2. Also, if you have
other routers in your network and you're using Cisco equipment, enter the
"redistribute" command (Cisco terminology for letting all the other routers
know the routing).

Finally, on the workstations located where your PM-OR-U is, be sure they
are all in the same subnet as the PM-OR-U and that the default gateway is
set to the address of the PM-OR-U, not that of the remote PM2.

I spent hours fighting with routing problems, all of which were caused by
my Cisco router doing what I had told it to do - handling that subnet.
Once I removed the subnet from the Cisco, the PM2 did a fine job of
directing data to the PM-OR-U. The hardware combination is quite
impressive - very fast and extremely stable.

Hope some of that helps... Good luck!

Andy
