Ascend claims that PPP framing is done on the modem card.
The modems run very hot though, even at idle. The exterior is noticably
warm, even though the MAX has three cooling fans.

I can manually take modems out of service. Ascend claims that modems
are automatically taken out of service if they fail, but their is not
indication of how this works.

Apparently, the MAX bogs out when loaded with ISDN calls. It probably
isn't wise to use the 4th T1 port for anything except pass through calls.

No problem for the MAX either. The MAX can frontend your PBX too (you
need to use another number for this), so you can share the same line pool
for voice-analog, data-analog, and data-digital.
