Not for PM2e's? I would kinda like to be able to do this plain modems
too. Simple load balancing works with the PM2 now, but if the pool
contains contains multiple PM2's, it doesn't always work...

The 4000 can run 4002 code, it just disables 2 of the T1 ports. The
4000 code will not support 12-modem cards, only 8-modem cards. It
doesn't seem like their is any difference.

Being able to take a call on a T1, and pass it through to a PRI, or vice
versa. This is mostly useful for people passing calls through to a PBX.
The MAX can convert call signalling between the two.

Not really. Which multirate the channel bonding is done at the network
level, so it appears to the system as single larger channel. This is only
support by AT&T switches. This provides Switched-384 and Switched-1536
service.
