This is kinda of an opinion thing. I think the MAX manual is one of the
worst I've seen: its big, with little content. The Livingston manuals
contain all the information you need in a shorter form.
Also, the first PM3s did not include a printed copy of the CLI manual.
You should probably print this if you didn't get one.
The MAX reference section omits many important dependencies (a awful
"feature" in the Ascend UI). For example, I wanted to turn a certain
feature on, but it was listed as "N/A", according to the reference manual,
the option was not dependant on anything. After a call to Ascend
tech-support, I was informed that an apparently unrelated option in
another menu had to be changed first, before the option that I wanted,
became available. The support person could offer no explanation why this
was.
