PM-11

Well, I've just recently got to this place where they are still using
PM-11s as terminal servers. Right now I am supposed to be installing 20
new lines. The problem, however, is that I can't figure out to get into
the PM-11s in order to bring them up onto ether.

I know theoretically, this should be a very easy thing. First, I should
hook up a null modem cable to s0, then I should reboot the machine and
login as !root.

Well, I've tried that. I've tried logging in at 9600, 8N1 with no flow
control serially (that is, through a null modem). That didn't work, I
get nothing but extended characters while it's booting up as well as
thereafter. Ok, that usually means that there is a communication speed
difference. So, not knowing what the ports are configured to, Ive tried
every speed from 2400-115200 with every flow control setting possible
(RTS/CTS, XON-XOFF, None).

Ive been on the web page and found some documentation that said
the flow control should be set either to software or to none, which, now
that I think about it rather makes sense. Unfortunately, I've retried it
at every possible speed setting and not got any response.

After this, I thought the null modem cable could be bad, but I
can log into the ones that are allready online simply by connecting
serially to them. (ie, I get the login prompt.)

I then opened up the PM-11 and found that there are dip switches
on the ether card, I've tried setting them to the same settings that work
on the 2er (obviously I realize this was not goign to work, but I was
taking a shot in the dark).

So it's not the null modem cable, it's not the serial port on my
connecting machine (because as I said, Im connecting to the online PM11s
just fine).

I've run out of ideas, which is why Im posting here. Im PRAYING that
somebody here knows enough about these old pm11s to tell me what Im doing
wrong. As far as I can tell, they've all had the upgrade allready (ie,
they have 4 memory chips where (I assume) there originally were 2).

So, if you can help me I would surely appreciate it. I will be checking
here continuosly util either somebody responds or I get it working by
some act of nature.

Heh, thanks.
