Is there any way that it can be done without messing up proper SNMP
implementation?
I wouldn't use this feature too often but it would prove to be quite
useful in my eyes. For example to see how many bytes have been transfered
or errors in one hour I could clear the counter and then in an hour see
how high the counters have gotten. Doing that instead of writing down the
current value of the counters and subtracting huge numbers. Also if you
screw up something and start getting a lot of error counters you can fix
it then reset the counters so when you look at port status a few weeks
ahead you can see how it is truely operating - not including that time you
screwed it up.
