I have done remote admin since mid 80's and prefer to
enter few or single complete commands a lot more than
trying to pace with cursor going like jojo when doing
repeated delete single characters operations. Remember
that line-editing function must redraw rest of the line
per each operation.
Heavily used PM with possibly limited capacity on trunk
(let's say you have remote POP somewhere where you have
PM3 one T1/E1 for users and one for router with Frame Relay
to take traffic forward) would IMO handle more easily
few strokes than someone resting on cursor keys, sounds
goofying enough.
Why then use META? Because they are defacto standard
(emacs, tcsh, bash, zsh, IOS, ...) and creating new
dialect would create confusion and hinder the usage
ie. *that would be considered bad design* believe me.

Auts, you should, it saves keystrokes, at least
one each time you use it :)

When you still don't have uniq, it should show
options line above rather than give error... just
try with bash, or do it with IOS or kermit style
where you complete with question mark, but
completion *is* useful still if you support
uniqueness, that was the point.

There was example for it ;)
Ok for example with M-5 you would
load next key/command, whatever it would
be, repeated five times.

That would cut in buffer to beginning of line,
which you could then ^Y in when needed... after
you find that you would only like to delete
only one word by getting first either side of it,
enter new and commit line, done.

Why not stick with defacto standard?
You got the idea of arguments anyway and ESC
is usually META (then real ESC is done hitting META
twice), but is also usually very easily changed to
any other key on most keyboars, some have even put
these new windoze keys found on currently sold pc
keyboard for META succesfully, but still i prefer ESC.
Just grab .../emacs/$version/etc/refcard.ps and
check there what you would like and can be done.

Indentation makes configuration a lot easier to read.
After a little while you know which things are at global
(aligned to left margin) and which settings are just
for some interface, process (RIP, OSPF processes etc)
and speeds up when you eyeball-grep config.
