Lifetime of the product vs cost, etc.
Socketing FLASH chips would add production cost to the unit for one. 384K of
the 512K in the older units is available for ComOS. We still have a good deal
of life left in those units with that much room - and they are already several
years old.
Part of that is as time goes on there are better compression techniques - so
you can fit more into the same space. A lot of it is just plain old tight
coding.
In another few years chances are there will be a new unit for that kind of
product level.
