That is indeed the right place, but there are a couple of cautions about it.

Inits placed there are "extra settings" which are sent after whatever
Bill Gates has decided in his infinite wisdom that your modem needs, so:

1. Do not include the leading "AT", just the commands that you want.

2. You might want to begin with "&F" or "&F1" to force the modem to a
sane, known state first.

A reasonable, somewhat generic "Extra settings" string, for a customer
who is dialing in, no auto answer, might begin like:

&F&C1&D2S0=0
