And this is being done now.

The right way.

With RADIUS.

It is already possible with proxying to share a single NAS with multiple
auth servers. The hacks to RADIUS for a basic system are not complex,
and with some more work it would be possible to setup a truly complex
system.

The next generation RADIUS server we're in testing with (all new code)
would probably handle this natively.

This is one of the main reasons RADIUS has proxying in the first place.
