HCF modems are different than the DF series.

>From what I can gather, the HCF modems are coming out in the new 5xxx
series computers, LT Winmodems (were) coming out in the 4xxx series
computers, and the 56k-DF modem came out either before the LT Winmodem on
the Compaq line, or they were used in some models of the Presarios along
with LT Winmodems.

We have a small handful of customers with Presario 56k-DF modems, looking
through our case notes, I find:

- All 56k-DF modems we find are in Presario 4540's
- as of Jan 1999, the lastest firware for these modems were found on
Compaq's support site, SoftPaq 5975
- 56k-DF modems seem to take Lucent commands
- at least one customer we had to force V.34 with S38=0-V90=0 before it
would autenticate against us.
- at least one customer forcing V.34 with S38=0-V90=0 did not work,
S38=0 and three commas after the phone number did help
- in some cases if the modem did not respond/port already open/etc
uninstalling it from Control Panel->Modems, rebooting, and then
reinstalling with Control Panel->Modems->Add, fixed the problem.

(aren't keeping tech support call notes handy? :)
